LOCAL POSITIONING SYSTEMS VERSUS STRUCTURAL MONITORING: A REVIEW

    Get PDF
SUMMARY Structural monitoring and structural health monitoring could take advantage from different devices to record the static or dynamic response of a structure. A positioning system provides displacement information on the location of moving objects, which is assumed to be the basic support to calibrate any structural mechanics model. The global positioning system could provide satisfactory accuracy in absolute displacement measurements. But the requirements of an open area position for the antennas and a roofed room for its data storage and power supply limit its flexibility and its applications. Several efforts are done to extend its field of application. The alternative is local positioning system. Non-contact sensors can be easily installed on existing infrastructure in different locations without changing their properties: several technological approaches have been exploited: laser-based, radar-based, vision-based, etc. In this paper, a number of existing options, together with their performances, are reviewed. Crossovers and critical scaling in the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model

We consider the scaling behavior of thermodynamic quantities in the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model near its quantum critical point (QCP). Our study has been motivated by the question about the thermodynamical signatures of this paradigmatic quantum critical system and, more generally, by the issue of how quantum criticality accumulates entropy. We find that the crossovers in the phase diagram of temperature and (the non-thermal control parameter) transverse field obey a general scaling ansatz, and so does the critical scaling behavior of the specific heat and magnetic expansion coefficient. Furthermore, the Gr\"{u}neisen ratio diverges in a power-law way when the QCP is accessed as a function of the transverse field at zero temperature, which follows the prediction of quantum critical scaling. However, at the critical field, upon decreasing the temperature, the Gr\"uneisen ratio approaches a constant instead of showing the expected divergence. We are able to understand this unusual result in terms of a peculiar form of the quantum critical scaling function for the free energy; the contribution to the Gr\"uneisen ratio vanishes at the linear order in a suitable Taylor expansion of the scaling function. In spite of this special form of the scaling function, we show that the entropy is still maximized near the QCP, as expected from the general scaling argument. Our results establish the telltale thermodynamic signature of a transverse-field Ising chain, and will thus facilitate the experimental identification of this model quantum-critical system in real materials.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

This paper addresses the problem of H∞ control for a class of uncertain stochastic systems with Markovian switching and time-varying delays. The system under consideration is subject to time-varying norm-bounded parameter uncertainties and an unknown nonlinear function in the state. An integral sliding surface corresponding to every mode is first constructed, and the given sliding mode controller concerning the transition rates of modes can deal with the effect of Markovian switching. The synthesized sliding mode control law ensures the reachability of the sliding surface for corresponding subsystems and the global stochastic stability of the sliding mode dynamics. A simulation example is presented to illustrate the proposed method

The Evolution of Measurement Methods of Comparative Advantage and New Trends in IntraProduct International Specialization

In the development and the evolution of international trade theory, comparative advantage has always been a core concept. A great deal of research pertains to the calculation methods of comparative advantage. However, most previous research on measurement methods of comparative advantage is mainly based on a country's import/export volume of a specific industry or product. Under the circumstances of contemporary intra-product international specialization, previous measurement methods are not appropriate. It is imperative to improve original measure methods of comparative advantage through stripping overseas contents of exports, and putting forward a new measurement index reflecting the domestic contents of export
